Dr. S.R.Rao received innumerable awards, including D.Litt., from Mysore University for his book, “Lothal and the Indus Civilisation.” honorary D.Litts from Mysore University, KuVemPu University (Shimoga) and Kannada Vishwa Vidyalaya. In 1977 he was awarded The Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship for two years. For his discovery of Dvaraka, he obtained the The World Ship Trust Award, F.I.E. Foundation Award and Gupta Foundation Award for individual excellence in Archaeology. He was made fellow of Asiatic of Asiatic society in 2010, was an elected member of UNESCO. In 2012, Archaeological survey of India, celeberating150 years of ASI, awarded him the Citation of Excellence. It runs: “ The Archaeological Survey of India, Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India, has immense pleasure in honoring you on the auspicious occasion of its Sesquicentennial Anniversary (1861-2011) Celebrations for your outstanding contribution in the field of Archaeological Researchers, Excavation, Decipherment of Indus Script, Marine Archaeology and Conservation of Monuments and in upholding its proclaimed objective of ‘Discovering the Ancient Glory’ (pratna-kirtim-apavrinu) and most respectfully bestow upon you this ‘Award of Excellence.’
The Nehru Memorial Museum in New Delhi and the opening day of the exhibit of his notes, letters and other documents are set for July 1, 2014. On that day, the Sindhu-Sarasvati Valley Civilization: New Perspectives (ed. Nalini Rao) – A Volume dedicated to the Memory of Dr.S.R.Rao will be released.
